The befriending programme provides companionship to older people who are socially isolated through a weekly volunteer visit. Many older people can find themselves socially isolated due to the onset of illness, living alone or caring for a partner as they age.

Our aim at the ARC Family Resource Centre, Raheen is to lessen their social isolation and enhance their quality of life. Befriending is all about building a one to one relationship based upon respect, trust and support. It is also about developing an informal and supportive relationship, often over a long period of time. This relationship is a voluntary one on both sides.

Befriending is worked when a volunteer is chosen by the older person and the support worker. The volunteer and older person are carefully matched through common interests, hobbies, and personalities. The volunteer then visits the older persons` home once a week, on the same day for an hour or two. All volunteers are garda vetted and trained.

If you have an hour or two to spare every week, we would be delighted if you would like to join us as a volunteer or, if you are an older person and would like some company please do not hesitate to contact Cathy on 051 442888
